Bipolar disorder, clinical depression, OCD, borderline personality disorder... even schizophrenia. All these serious mental illnesses tend to improve as a person ages & "mellows out". But there's one exception in the mental health world, one condition that almost universally gets WORSE with age. That condition is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). There are numerous reasons for this which we'll get into in a minute, but this matters because the maniac running our country and the free world most certainly has some degree of this Cluster B personality disorder in combination with his long-term stimulant abuse problem. More on THAT below too.
While his first term as 45th president was a nightmare, he's now even older & more senile: 8 years older than when he was first sworn in to be exact. This might not mean much if he were, say, in his 50s or 60s, but he is in fact, the oldest president of all time at inauguration at the overripe age of 78. (Yes, even older than the almost-certainly demented 2nd-term Reagan or Biden). Join me as I examine how this little factoid could play a ginormous role in the future (or lack thereof) of our country in the coming years.
NPD Basics
When most people hear the term "Narcissist," they think of someone egotistical, grandiose, boisterous & self-centered, and in fact that's exactly how Donald Trump presents. He would certainly fall under the "grandiose narcissism" subtype as opposed to the covert/vulnerable one, but some would go even further & classify him as a full-on malignant narcissist. That is, a grandiose narcissists with dark, manipulative traits and a total lack of remorse, empathy or ethics. Sort of like if a narc & an Antisocial Personality had a lovechild. 🖤 + 🖤= 🍊
While there are obvious issues with labeling someone you've never met with a mental illness, especially when you're not qualified to make such a diagnosis as I am not, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to note the excessive need for admiration, intolerance to criticism, manipulative tendencies, habitual lying, combativeness, grudge-holding, broken relationships & other traits associated with what laymen label "narcissism" (not a psych diagnosis) in herr leader. Dr. Todd Grande doesn't hesitate to call him a narc despite his own generally conservative leanings so I feel pretty comfy doing the same.
Real quick regarding the stimulant thing: It's been said that Trump spent most of the 1980s addicted to the diet drug diethylpropion (Tenuate), an amphetamine-like stimulant prescribed by a Dr. Greenberg. This article contains a photocopy of his 1992 medical record (4 years before HIPAA) from said doctor's clinic which his brother also allegedly attended. In true narcissist form, he was initially taking the drug to lose weight but seemingly just liked how the pills made him feel because, according to other sources, his stimulant habit has continued in more recent years.
Tom Arnold, former drug addict with a sister who was a meth kingpen for many years, claims to have caught him snorting Adderall out of a textbook on The Apprentice & states that a producer also was aware of his Adderall abuse... an oddly-specific claim if untrue. If one wanted to slander a person by calling them a stimulant abuser without proof, a more likely insult would be "Trump did coke in the '80s" or "Trump's a fuckin' tweaker"--not "Trump did diethylpropion from '82-92" or these other highly specific accusations (with receipts). (Granted, Arnold does refer to him as a "speed freak," but he doesn't stop there thankfully, offering far more detail as did the people who gave the diethylpropion account).
After catching him up at 4 a.m. recently rambling about WWIII for no reason, I'm personally convinced he's still a stimulant abuser. It would explain his erratic career trajectory from doing random guest spots on shows like The Fresh Prince, Home Alone 2, The Nanny & McDonald's commercials to becoming a WWE wrestler to laying the verbal smackdown on Rosie O'Donnell in 2006 before scoring his own show & then running for prez... twice. Because nothing else really does.
Ironically he was probably at the height of his cultural popularity when he was a registered Independent or Democrat and stayed at the periphery of society, not waxing poetic about pussy-grabbing or speaking more than a couple of pre-scripted lines in a walk-on role. Because once he started the birther rants & press conferences about 'bad hombres' he was on some other shit. Actually it all started with the Rosie O'Donnell feud when she mocked his voice & combover. A huge blow to his ego. How dare a woman, let alone one as frumpy as she, make comments like that?
Anyway.
Beware: The Aging Narc
Narcissists rely on their (imagined) good looks, quick wit, physical strength, virility & other superficial traits to feel important in life & keep others in their place. When times get tough they often retreat into a world of fantasy in which they imagine themselves as having great power, immortality, romantic relationships or fame, so when the aging process hits them it can be a humbling experience. Silly as it sounds, these little reminders that they're not immortal--the gray hairs, crow's feet, lower back pain--can be almost unbearable & do a number on their already brittle self-esteem.
Oh, I forgot to mention perhaps the most counterintuitive thing about narcissists is their crummy self-worth that comes almost entirely from the validation of others. So imagine what happens to their self-image when they've gone their whole life valuing others for their looks & other superficial shit. Rather than building an actual personality or bettering themselves in any way, they got by on their youth, vitality, wealth, athleticism, etc. What happens when they're old & tired, their bodies & minds hobbled by time, their looks & youthful coolness a relic of a bygone era? Exactly what you'd expect: they get meaner, more vengeful & much more demanding. If they have to be punished by aging, everyone around them will be punished by them.
Trump's first wife Ivana (RIP) claimed in her book that he raped her & ripped her hair out after she made a comment about a particularly bad hair transplant he'd recently gotten, which is in line with the narcisssist's sensitivity to aging, perceived criticism and superficial appearances. (She later walked the accusation back by saying it was not rape "in the criminal sense," with his attorney Michael Cohen claiming "you can't rape your spouse," before threatening to sue Daily Beast reporter Tim Mak if he uttered the words "Trump" and "rape" in the same sentence. (It's all in the link above). That's not the only credible claim of rape against Trump, unfortunately. But that's not the focus of this article so I'm gonna leave that subject be. We'll just file that under "additional proof of malignant narcissism" since rape is a totally antisocial & barbaric thing to do, something you'd expect to see our chimp or gorilla cousins engage in... not us.
Too Much Too Soon
Already in his 2nd term Trump has begun gutting Medicare & Medicaid, abolishing the Department of Education, limiting what SNAP recipients can purchase with their own funds, laying off/firing tons of federal employees, promising to ethnically cleanse Gaza of its native Palestinian population, handing out special deals to his butt buddy Elon Musk, doing petty shit like making English the official language of the U.S. and trying to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America", signing 70 executive orders--far more than any president in history--and getting into a shouting match with Ukranian president Zelenskyy while ordering him to "thank" the U.S. It appears he's on a warpath & aims to hurt/punish or even kill anyone deemed unimportant or oppositional to his goals.
If his 1st term was bad, his 2nd is going to be downright disastrous--potentially an endgame nail-in-the-coffin for our ailing empire. His particular hatred for Mexicans, Muslims, China, poor people, scientists/medical experts, the federal government & anyone who dares call him on his bullshit makes him an unfit leader, but now he's out for blood. Everyone who dared hold him remotely accountable for inciting an insurrection, every comedian who mocked him on late night TV, every American who voted against him--all must pay.
The fact he was shot/shot at twice can't help matters, but the main driving force behind his erratic, vengeful behavior is his own life, which is rapidly winding down. Trump is an elderly 78-year-old male in a country where the average lifespan for men is 73-81 years & declining. In fact the gap between male and female life expectancies is the largest it's been in ages at 6 years. No matter how you slice it, he's on borrowed time and his best days are well behind him. He's acutely aware of this & aims to even the playing field by making all of our remaining years Hell on Earth by dismantling our few remaining social safety nets, gutting public/federal programs & destroying the things that made the United States a developed country.
Trump is like a Baby Boomer on steroids, not merely complacent or ignorant about issues like climate change & high cost-of-living but actively malicious, taking every opportunity to fatten his pockets while selling us further down the river. His own father was Satan incarnate & together they bullied Trump's brother to an early grave. HE'S the bad hombre of which he speaks, "bringing drugs, bringing rape" & living off the government teat. He's a nepo baby billionaire who's never known struggle and has the reigns of power at the worst possible time: in the sunset years of life when he's facing his own mortality.
That's bad news for all of us.
If there's a sliver of schaudenfraude to be had in this trainwreck, it's that the poor, uneducated, mouth-breathing whites were so emboldened by his 1st presidency are bound to be a lot quieter this time around as he serves them up on a silver platter to the wolves right along with the minorities, immigrants, gays, feminists, mentally ill, Muslims, poor, disabled & addicted folks he targeted the 1st time around. Because this time he's not pretending to give a fuck whether you voted for him or not--why would he? It's his final term & his last few trips around the sun & even that may get cut short by another rooftop edgelord. He doesn't need your approval or your future votes. His sole goal is cementing his legacy as biggest villain in U.S. history; the guy who finished what Osama started when the 1st plane struck the North tower on that clear Tuesday morning 24 years ago. This is his grand magnum opus middle finger to his sworn enemies: China, Mexican immigrants, Muslims & us. All of us. Everyone who dared question his involvement in those rapes, pornstar payoffs, the insurrection, the Epstein saga. Everyone who grilled him at those two Federal trials, the "fake news" media that calls out his bullshit, the innuendo about "pee-pee tapes," everyone who mocked his speech patterns, orange skin or combover.
That's the other thing about narcs: they may not remember that time they ran over your foot with a Mack truck or intentionally pushed you down a flight of stairs for their own amusement, but they damn sure keep immaculate score & will remember every time you EVER bumped into them, failed to say "excuse me" when walking past or other minuscule transgressions. And they hold a mean grudge.
...the pathetic part is, even though Senate Dems are standing around with their fingers in their asses as our last social safety nets are ripped to shreds, we still have not united along class lines & organized a meaningful demonstration, be it a general strike, sit-in, mutual aid drives for those affected by the sudden layoffs, a mass nationwide boycott or other peaceful protest. This is where a majority of our influence lies, not in the voting booth. Even though a majority of people of all parties supported Luigi Mangione's actions, it hasn't been enough to defeat for-profit health insurance & the system that literally creates & enables CEOs like Brian Thompson of UnitedHealth. We churn out some quality memes, though. Good thing too because that's about ALL America produces these days.
We're about to see just how bad things can get when you combine Brave New World levels of distraction & apathy with the seething rage of a sleep-deprived geriatric narcissist with a score to settle. As someone raised by narcissists, to say this is an uncomfortable experience is putting it mildly.
