[Review] - Cannabis Edibles: Dixie Berry Blast Gummies (Sativa)

If you follow my blog you already know how I feel about the Dixie brand of edibles.  They're top notch in everything they put out.  But I've finally found my first 5 of 5 star product.  These Berry Blast gummies taste so damn good I could eat a whole bag...and that's dangerous.  Because my weed tolerance won't allow that.

I tried one of their Sativa gummies before bed last night since I'm weird & Sativa actually makes me sedated rather than stimulated.  But I wasn't expecting the gummy to taste SO. DANG. GOOD.  I usually eat about half a gummy at most but ended up sucking down the whole thing, which resulted in some weird dreams & thoughts as I drifted off.  Unlike the Tropic Twist flavor, the Berry Blast contain mixed colors & flavors; I ate a blue one and it was yummy.  So soft & coated in a light dusting of white sugar that was just mouth-watering.  Only the tiniest hint of cannabis aftertaste but it was almost imperceptible even to me, a supertaster.  I actually wish Dixie made plain unmedicated candy because I'd buy the shit out of them.

1 Berry Blast gummy (10mg THC)

Each bag contains 100 mg of THC and 1.71% terpenes, which shakes out to 10 mg THC per gummy.  A good starter dose for a beginner.  Maybe a more experienced person could eat an entire bag & feel fine but not this psychonaut.  I actually prefer edibles that taste somewhat bad so I'm not tempted to overdo it, but if you don't have a low tolerance issue these will be right up your alley.  I paid $24 for a bag which is more than fair.  Each gummy contains 20 calories, 4g of carbs & 3g added sugars.

In conclusion, I'm giving Berry Blast Sativa Gummies by Dixie 5 of 5 stars for flavor, effectiveness & price.  And I don't give out perfect ratings often.  There's really nothing to be improved upon with these which is why they get the 5-star treatment.  If your dispo has them, don't miss a chance to try 'em.

[Review] - Cannabis Flower: Durban Poison

It's finally happened:  Baby's first landrace!  I originally thought my Maui Wowie was a landrace but no, it's technically just a "classic" strain.  But Durban Poison is the real deal:  a strain that originated in Africa & became genetically accustomed to the climate, soil, nutrients & other environmental factors unique to that region over many generations.  In other words, it's native and unmolested by breeders who, in their drive to create the most potent/tasty bud, have driven landraces to near extinction.  That's what makes them so special today.

Durban Poison is a powerhouse sativa originating in the city of Durban, South Africa.  The smell is described as somewhat like aniseed or licorice and the effects highly energizing, making it a wake-and-bake strain all the way.  It was popularized in the 1970s by Ed Rosenthal, who selectively bred it to increase resin production.  My cut contains an impressive 20.8% THC and is rich in terpinolene, ocimene & pinene.  I paid $6 for a half-gram of this uplifting landrace baddie.  She is a pure sativa with no indica genes--a rare find today.  Will need to adjust my dose accordingly to avoid paranoia.  This strain is said to be rich in THCv, which causes appetite suppression & some of the cannabis plant's more psychedelic/stimulating effects.  Levels can reach up to 1% THCv in some cuts.

Durban poison nug

Upon opening the bottle I'm hit with a beautiful smell, though I wouldn't describe it as licorice or anise.  More like a zesty floral bouquet of...something.  Maybe on the lime end of the citrus spectrum?  But not quite.  That's the color I'm seeing when I sniff it:  light green with after-notes of orange.  It truly is a treat for the nose.  The nugs are conical and lightish green with trichomes covering every millimeter of the foliage.  But now for the good part.  (Not the picture because my camera is trash).

I do my regular hemp + marijuana joint combo with about 60% hemp & 40% weed in a skinny ass white grape flavored joint.  The taste of this strain is nothing to write home about but at least it's cured well & burns evenly.  (It's 100+ degrees outside so I kinda wish it'd hurry up & burn faster lol).  My head feels clear & my vision crisp after finishing it.  No paranoia or pounding heart in sight.   I started this day with a banging headache & lack of sleep so I'm probably not getting the full Durban experience as my mood/pain levels are not at baseline to start.

White grape Durban Poison joint

The comedown is smooth: no fatigue or brain fog in sight.  But I wouldn't exactly classify the high as 'motivational' either.  For me it was right in the middle--cleared up the cobwebs in my throbbing head without drowsiness OR stimulation.  This ain't Green Crack, in other words.  Maybe higher doses would be more "up" but in this case it was a nice evening strain to end a shitty day.  My tolerance is also elevated due to trying out some edibles yesterday so again, this wasn't a baseline reading.

My initial impression of Durban Poison is a 4.8 of 5 stars for its balanced effects & mental clarity.  The aroma is unique if that's your thing and the nugs are gorgeous, but the taste was rather bland in my case.  My first experience was pretty middle-of-the-road but as stated above, my brain was not at baseline when I smoked it.  Check this review again for updates.

I apologize again for my worthless potato phone quality pics.  It's one of the reasons I've been asking for donations.  All proceeds will go directly toward upgrading this site & the content.

[Review] - Cannabis Edibles: Dixie Tarts

I was so impressed with Dixie's gummies that I figured the tarts would be even better.  Who doesn't love SweeTarts, Smarties & other sour hard candies?  I sometimes get intense cravings for sour candy that are overpowering (which probably means I have some kind of deficiency, heh).  So I tend to prefer this type of edible to chocolates or savory options.  In any case, I grabbed one box of the Tarts on my last dispensary trip which I'll be reviewing for you here.

Unlike the gummies, Dixie Tarts only come in one strain (Hybrid) but they contain 3 flavors per container:  grape, lemon & cherry.  The gummies are single-flavor.  The tarts are also smaller than the gummies but large enough to make microdosing doable if you want to break them into pieces.  And they are more convenient for summertime use because they don't melt & the container is much smaller--just a little box that fits in the palm of your hand or purse/backpack.

Box with quarter for comparison

They smell delicious upon opening, though the container is a bit hard to finagle.  The taste is somewhat less yummy though still satisfies that sour/sweet craving if you don't mind the faint flavor of reefer.  The instructions say to "let the tart fully dissolve in your mouth for quicker uptake" but I just chewed mine.  It says "30 minute onset" on the back but edibles always hit me instantly for some reason.  The tarts are chewy rather than crunchy which definitely helps with dosing.  The texture reminds me of those giant chewy SweeTarts from back in the day (wonder if they still make those?)  Each tart has 10mg THC with 100mg per box.  I paid $24 for one box.

Actual Dixie Tart (left)

Not really seeing any downsides so far unless you just prefer the gummies.  The taste is definitely more weedy but that's fine by me since I only take small doses at a time anyway.  They'd be ideal for concerts, festivals or other outdoor activities where gummies or other sticky edibles would melt in the heat.  The real test is whether they get you medicated, and the answer is YES.  Dixie is a quality brand that's been sought after nationwide since Colorado was the only legal state.

I give Dixie Tarts a 4.8 of 5 stars for effectiveness, flavor & convenience of use.  I'd rate the gummies sliiiiightly higher in the taste department but the tarts are more convenient overall due to the texture & size.  More discreet too.  I've only tried the cherry flavor so far but I'm a fan (the cherry & grape look an awful lot alike in terms of color...had to do a taste test to be sure).  Will def be buying more of these sour bois.

[Review] - Canna Haus Farms CBD Flower: Hawaiian Haze (7 grams)

Vendor:  Canna Haus Farms
Location:  Wisconsin, USA.
Items:  Hemp flower, dog tincture, pre-rolls, honey & CBD rosin.
Rating:  4.8 of 5 stars
Website:  cannahausfarms.com

If you read my cannabis flower reviews you'll know I like to cut my joints with a generous pinch of hemp/CBD flower to mellow out the THC.  But lately I've run out of CBD bud & have been using hemp LEAF from teabags which is harsh af.  Not ideal for my lungs in a time of COVID.  So I decided to splurge on some decent flower from an online vendor.  I went to Reddit's /r/CBDFlower sub & checked out their vendor spreadsheet to see what's good.  I wasn't being picky whatsoever as all CBD flower is basically the same--I just need something that's dried & cured well & won't hit too harshly.

I settled on Canna Haus.  No real reason, it was the second vendor I clicked & looked good enough.  I paid $15 + $3 shipping for 7 grams of Hawaiian Haze CBD flower in a bag--they also have glass jars for a little extra dough.  The strain is described as "floral smelling with a taste of ripe tropical fruit" and slow-cured/hand-trimmed which is good enough for me.  It has 4 positive 5-star reviews that aren't too descriptive, one describing it as a 'chattery, calm' effect.  Hawaiian Haze has a 14.4% CBD content which is average to good for hemp bud.  They also had a bunch of other strains including Lifter, Suver Haze, Painted Lady, Berry Blossom & T1 Trump (lol).  I paid with credit card with no issues.

I received my order 6 days late due to coronavirus affecting the postal system.  Shipping was First Class.  Hawaiian Haze is said to be a Sativa-dominant hybrid with a total THC content not exceeding 0.03% as required by law.  The smell is absolutely heavenly--pure citrus with a hint of Skittles and skunk.  Good enough to eat.  It's all small buds--no leaf material.  Looks better than the weed I smoked in high school at any rate.

Hawaiian Haze; 7 grams in zipper pouch

It breaks up well & is the right consistency.  Not too wet or dry.  I pack it into a joint along with my usual fare (a small smattering of East Coast Diesel) where I find that it burns smoothly...much more smoothly than those damn hemp leaves I was smoking.  The joint takes a lot longer to finish and burns more evenly but clogs up severely at the tip with resin.  This just proves it's quality hemp I guess?

Before overcoming my migraines, I was a regular smoker of plain hemp flower (without added cannabis bud) as it helped immensely with the pain.  This strain seems like a great candidate for that purpose.  Not everyone is into getting high.  I find that CBD flower provides jusssst the right amount of mental clarity without spilling over into "noticeably stoned/paranoid" territory.  This joint contained about 85% hemp to 15% weed.

Overall I give Hawaiian Haze from Canna Haus a 4.8 of 5 stars for quality, price & appearance.  It was perfect in every way except the clogging with goo aspect, and I guess that's a sign of quality more than anything.  I've never had hemp do that so it was unexpected.

Drugs in the Time of Civil Unrest

Today I read the tragic story of Sarah Grossman, a 22-year-old woman who died of an asthma attack triggered by tear gas deployed at the Columbus, OH, protests.  This got me thinking:  How can our government ban every recreational drug under the sun but tear gas, pepper spray, flash-bangs & other noxious/crippling weapons are perfectly legal for cops to use indiscriminately against citizens?  Beyond the argument that we should be allowed to ingest anything we want because it's our body, they have no right to lock us up, raid our homes, remove our voting rights, charge insane fines & wreck our future employment prospects over something that is a personal choice.  Especially while they're flooding the streets with a potentially deadly gas that was banned internationally as a war weapon in 1997.

R.I.P. Sarah Grossman, victim of internationally banned chemical weapons

These protests (and yes, riots) have illuminated so many unjust laws in our society of which this is only one.  As always, Black people bear the brunt of them but we should all be outraged if only for selfish reasons.  Police brutality can happen to any of us.  Tony Timpa--a white man--was murdered in much the same way as George Floyd, with a knee on the neck for 13 minutes.  The NAACP invited his mother to speak at their recent rally in Texas.  We've seen cops behaving badly in cities across the country during these uprisings, bowling over elderly people, running crowds down with police vehicles, destroying medic supplies & killing innocent people like David McAtee, whose body was left in the street for 12 hours after he was shot by cops defending while his BBQ business.  While police are more brutal toward Black & brown people, they are absolutely violent toward anyone they deem oppositional.

Frighteningly, the DEA has now been given permission to conduct covert surveillance on George Floyd protesters & enforce ANY federal crime committed at the protests.  What could the Drug Enforcement Agency possibly have to do with protests against racism & police brutality?  This sounds like something straight out of the Richard Nixon playbook.  For those who don't know, it's been claimed by a very reliable source that President Nixon started the War on Drugs as a means to criminalize anti-war protesters, Black Panthers & other counterculture groups during the '60s.  "We can't arrest people for being Black, but we can arrest them for using a drug associated with Blackness & hippies."  [paraphrased]

The FBI used marijuana as an excuse to raid Black Panther Party quarters.

Things have been looking up in the last few years with cannabis laws relaxing & talks of decriminalizing psychedelics in some places, but we must stay on our guard.  The government isn't going to relinquish its last major method of silencing people for a victimless crime, particularly with all these protests & online social justice movements happening.  The idea that voting Trump out of office will fix the threat is naive at best & delusional at worst.  Joe Biden is ardently anti-cannabis (more so than even Trump) & created the RAVE Act which made it a crime to hand out water bottles at raves, resulting in countless preventable MDMA-related deaths.  We must keep the momentum going & remain vigilant about all bills being passed.  Our government has a habit of passing terrible legislation while the news is reporting on other things so we don't notice.

If you're attending any kind of political rally or protest, leave your drugs at home.  Not your lifesaving meds obviously but anything that might get you arrested.  Be sure to erase any incriminating texts on your phone in case a cop gets hold of it.  (This post is being written during the time of the George Floyd protests but applies to ANY future situation where law enforcement is likely to be in attendance).  As a substance user you must be extra aware of the threat of imprisonment & police brutality at all times.  If all the documentaries about prison & wrongful imprisonment haven't given you the heads-up, America is a full-blown police state that incarcerates an insane amount of our population--more than any nation on Earth.  Your chances of ending up there are already high:  I think the official statistics are around 1 in 25 for whites & 1 in 4 for Blacks.  Being a substance user--even a peaceful, otherwise law-abiding one--increases your risk exponentially.  Protect yourself.

Regarding the George Floyd Murder

So much has already been written about this subject I don't feel there's much I can add besides my opinion, and those are a dime a dozen.  Like assholes, everybody's got one.  What makes MINE special?  Nothing.  But maybe I can contribute to the conversation by sharing something people can relate to in some small way.  A life raft for people in the same boat.

I live in a red state in the Bible Belt with a family that routinely spouts racial slurs & doesn't "get" the point of all this "looting and destruction".  While I haven't been directly involved in the protests, I'm subjected to hateful talk about the situation daily.  We've already had several screaming matches that have ended with me bawling in my room & them fuming about me under their breath.  It's painful, even though I'm white as Casper, to hear the n-bomb dropped liberally (the ONLY thing liberal about my parents is their use of that word) in the immediate aftermath of the slaughter of innocent Black people by police.  It makes me question how I could've descended from these people biologically or environmentally...how we could be so similar looking yet continents apart ideologically.  In short, it fucking hurts.

1984 Detroit Tigers World Series riot

But not nearly as much as it must hurt to see people who look like you or your precious children getting assassinated on the street every other day by those in power.  Those who should be held to higher standards yet are getting away with murder.  Whether it's drug war fallout, diseases like Covid-19 or police brutality, Black people bear the brunt of it in America.  Always have.  And they've tried every peaceful method of begging & pleading with the system since Day 1 to almost no avail.  Being third-class citizens in a country your ancestors literally built is not something you can relate to as a white man or woman--even if you're dirt poor--so if you don't have anything constructive to say about this situation maybe you should sit this one out.

(Yeah, right.  Wouldn't that be nice?)

Worse yet, my loved ones are talking about police like THEY'RE the victims.  The same police who are decked out in full riot gear & look indistinguishable from a standing military.  I'd sure as fuck prefer to be a cop in a riot than an American nurse in a hospital during a pandemic.  All they have are trash bags & reused masks for protection against a novel deadly virus.  Meanwhile, our police are lobbing teargas & flash bangs with their giant shields up while marching in steel toed boots like a state-funded militia.  To the rest of the world we must look like a police state similar to authoritarian China.  Many cities have even deployed the National Guard in addition to police marching in the street.  It's shameful.  All for something that could've been prevented had 4 crooked cops been arrested at the scene of the George Floyd murder.  Compare this to the paltry response to the Covid pandemic a few months ago & you start to see where our government's priorities lie.

2020 George Floyd protest

But America loves to victim-blame, so they focus on isolated incidents of looting & vandalism among the largely peaceful protests, their condescending instructions on "how to protest correctly" ringing hollow in the ears of victims who have tried it their way for 200+ years & gotten nowhere.

Handling Hatred at Home

Despite the scale of the uprising, the majority of us are witnessing it from afar & trying to digest the fallout from the safety of our homes.  Yet many of us have had conflict with those who don't agree with our take on the issue which is taxing psychologically.  Online trolls are one thing but when it's your own friends or family it can really make you question these relationships.

How many of you know what it feels like to win an argument with one of these cruel fascist sympathizers only to have them resort to personal put-downs?  Nothing is off limits:  looks, disability, career missteps, relationship status, sexual history, addictions, past traumas & anything else to make you feel small.  It's the same tactic as those who tell protesters to "get a job" or "give back their stimulus check," as if anyone who makes time to protest their oppression must surely be unemployed & shiftless.  The only thing "lazy" is their debate skills.  Resorting to ad hominem attacks is the oldest & dumbest trick in the book, so don't take it too personal.  After all, that's what they're counting on.  Take a few deep breaths & keep your cool.

Always remember:  your peace is more important than trying to win an unwinnable argument.  As Bill Murray once said "Winning an argument with a smart person is hard.  Winning an argument with a stupid person is impossible."  While it's important to fight racism & other forms of injustice, you have to know when to throw in the towel for your own health & sanity.  Some people just can't be reasoned with due to a lack of neuroplasticity, willingness to grow or plain old prejudice.  When the issue is lack of understanding or exposure to other world views, there's hope.  When it's stubbornness due to a hardened heart and feelings of entitlement or superiority, there's not.

Leopards don't change their spots.  This is a painful realization when those "leopards" are our loved ones.  And it's a hard task determining who's truly a leopard vs. an ignorant, well-intentioned person who just needs some perspective.  This is where therapy comes in handy.  You can either learn to love them AROUND their prejudices or cut them off completely & move on.  Your call.  There is no right answer.  In some cases they may actually cut you off for not agreeing with them.  C'est la vie.  Again, therapy will likely be instrumental in helping you grieve & do the heavy lifting of moving on without them.

It's a fine line trying to decide when to interject & when to let sleeping dogs lie or simply walk away from hateful people in your personal life.  Change begins at home so do your best to choose a partner who shares your views on the important issues & instill these views in your children while also teaching them to think critically & stand up to authority when necessary.  You may not be able to change your parents or grandparents but there's a lot of hope for the younger generation.

During collectively traumatizing times like this it's vital to make time for self-care, be it through meditation, therapy with a trained counselor, journaling or other de-stressing methods.  You can't change the world if you aren't healthy yourself.  And above all else, ensure your physical safety as much as possible if you're going to participate in the protests directly.  Wear a mask to reduce the risk of contracting Covid & take other precautions like those shown in the graphic below to protect against teargas & other potential dangers.  Your life matters.
